As all owners of soft tops I always look forward to the first topless day of the year. Today it got up to 79, the sky was clear and it was a wonderful day to drop the top and just go for a drive. My little guy and I thoroughly enjoyed our day today. We ran some errands then had a picnic lunch in the park. Tomorrow the weather is meant to be the same as today…perfect!

I have been researching what we need to do to get the Jeep ready and how to tow it behind the RV. I was not expecting the horror stories I have come across! I’ve been reading about burnt out gearboxes, shredded tires and dead batteries just to name a few. I could care less about the battery, cheap and easy to fix or replace but the other issues are huge and costly mistakes.

We have decided that we’re going to make a checklist that we both have to check before we get ready to roll. This way the blame can not lie with just one of us as we both will have checked off the checklist and will share the blame. We are also considering just getting a trailer and saving the tires on the Jeep. We still have a couple of months to make up our minds. Does anyone have any experience or expertise they can share with us on this? This just gives me yet another thing to obsess over in the coming months.

We had the Jeep serviced a few days ago for what we thought would be the last service under the factory warranty. It turns out that the dealership we bought the Wrangler from was wrong and the factory warranty doesn’t run out until February 2010. I got a better deal on the Jeep than I realized. I was getting ready to buy the extended warranty but now I get to hold off for awhile longer.

We did find out why we have always struggled with the top (in the rain heading to Vegas comes to mind); the header bar is bent. Its good to know that we haven’t lost our touch. the header is under warranty and the parts should be in this week so we can have it fixed. Just in time for spring!

My husband and I have been talking about this being the summer to get the lift done on the Jeep. We went out for dinner earlier and a Wrangler was in the parking lot with what we think is a 4″ lift. My husband wanted to know what size tire is on it. I wonder what someone watching would have thought with my husband on the ground looking at someones tires. The Jeep we were looking at was on 35′s and we think its a bit too much for us. The Jeep is going to be towed behind the RV and we’re looking for something that is going to be practical on the road yet gives us a bit more clearance for off road. We’ve finally decided we’re going to get an OME 2.5″ lift. It’ll work well for us because we’ll still be able to get the kids in and out of the car. With the Jeep going to be our toad it still needs to be family friendly since it’ll become our main car for when we’re on the road. When the kids are a bit older and can strap themselves into the car we’ll go all out.
